The Most Valuable Estate Planning Tool Isn't a Legal Document

The estate planning tool your family will thank you for

When people think about estate planning, they often focus on the legal documents.

Their will, power of attorney, and representation agreement.

These documents are certainly important. They outline your wishes and give trusted individuals the authority to act on your behalf.

But there is another estate planning tool that can be just as valuable to your family and executor. An Estate Information Binder.

Imagine being asked to settle the estate of a loved one. You know they had bank accounts, investments, insurance policies, and important contacts, but you have no idea where anything is located.

Unfortunately, this is a situation many executors face.

A well-organized Estate Information Binder can save your family countless hours of stress, uncertainty, and frustration during an already difficult time.

The binder doesn't need to be complicated. It simply brings together the key information your executor or family members may need if something happens to you.

Items to consider including are:

• Contact information for your lawyer, accountant, financial advisor, and insurance professional

• The location of your will, power of attorney, and other legal documents

• A list of bank accounts, investment accounts, pensions, and insurance policies

• Information about your home, mortgage, and other properties

• Details about any debts or liabilities

• A list of important subscriptions and memberships

• Digital assets such as email accounts, online storage, and password information

• Funeral or memorial preferences

• A current list of beneficiaries and emergency contacts

It's also important to review and update the information regularly. An outdated binder can be nearly as frustrating as having no information at all.

One of the greatest gifts you can leave your loved ones is not simply a well-written will. It's making their job easier when they need it most.

Estate planning isn't only about distributing assets. It's about reducing stress, creating clarity, and helping the people you care about navigate a difficult transition.

If you haven't already created an Estate Information Binder, it may be one of the most valuable estate planning projects you undertake this year.
